The course of Fluid Mechanics is designed to introduce students to the fundamental engineering science concepts related to the mechanics of fluids. This includes basic fluid properties, fluid statics, fluid dynamics, fluid viscosity and turbulence, introduction to flow in closed conduits, pumps and pumping.

The aim of this course is to provide students with an understanding of the basic principles of fluid mechanics and of their application to civil engineering problems.

There is a strong focus on water in the course as this is one of the most important fluids for Civil Engineering practice.

This course forms the basis for subsequent courses in next two years such as Irrigation and Drainage Engineering (3^rd year), Hydraulic Structures (4^th year), Sanitary Engineering (4^th year) and Hydrology (4^th year).
